The Economic Cost of ZOONOSES: in the Case of Avian Influenza
Rhee Hae-Chun

Lim Hyun-Sul
Abstract
This study is to assess economic losses resulting from zoonoses while employing contingent valuation method and macro economic model. The study is based on survey findings on farms and the general public of human and cattle Brucellosis and avian influenza.
We found the followings relative to avian influenza. WTP of respondents to avoid the emerging infectious disease was presumed to be relatively high and the nation¡¯s potential loss is substantial. Moreover, people show higher WPT to avoid the transmission to human and poultry if they are more health conscious, more environment-friendly or more committed to consumer activism if they appreciate the lack of safety in food preservatives and additives or in contaminated food; if they suffered from infectious diseases or had livestock suffered from transmission if they avoided consumption of farm products because of animal diseases in the past, if they are highly educated or have higher income; or if an offer given was lower. Economic losses of the disease are estimated at KRW 228.5 billion.
